If you think someone is having a stroke

A stroke is a blocked or burst blood vessel in the brain. Treatment works best in the first few hours, and the benefit falls away quickly after that. Check these six signs.

  • BBalanceSudden loss of balance or coordination
  • EEyesSudden blurred vision or loss of vision
  • FFaceOne side of the face droops when they smile
  • AArmsOne arm drifts down when both are raised
  • SSpeechSlurred speech, or cannot find the right words
  • TTimeNote when symptoms started. Doctors will ask.
Call 108 and go to a hospital with a CT scanner immediately.
Do not wait to see if the symptoms settle. Do not give food, water or medicines by mouth. Bring a list of the person's regular medicines if you can.

What I treat

Some problems need open surgery. Others are better reached from inside the blood vessel. I do both, so the choice is made on the case — not on what I happen to be able to offer.
